Rise of the planet of the apes records 5.9 crores in its India opening
The James Franco-Freida Pinto visual effects extravaganza is running to packed houses across India and has received a bumper opening in not just English, but all its regional languages: Hindi, Tamil and Telegu. With the critics worldwide already raving about the film, 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' has been well received by fans as well as critics from all parts of India as well. The film in fact has grossed far more than all the other Indian releases that opened along with it.
Touted as one of the most entertaining films of this year, 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes', directed by Rupert Wyatt, has already gathered a lot of Oscar buzz in Hollywood, for its spectacular special effects by Oscar winning agency Weta Digital, and Andy Serkis performance capture as Caesar the ape for the film.
Talking about the phenomenal opening success of the film, Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios India says, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a powerful film with a gripping storyline and splendid performances. We are glad that audiences from across the country are appreciating the film, and given the strong word of mouth coming from all centers, we are confident that the film will have an extended run in India."
Sachin & Ranjeeta's classic love story turns into 'Jaana Pehchana'
Released in 1978, Rajshri's hit 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se' won over the audience then, especially those who were young and in love. Sachin Pilgaonkar and Ranjeeta Kaur's heartfelt romance, songs, and movie's sad ending (heroine's demise) - everything about the movie has a memorable impression on movie buffs. And now in this new age of glitter and shine the banner is going to present a contemporary version of the classic movie.
Rajshri Productions is taking the magic of 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se' (AKJS) forward with a sequel titled 'Jaana Pehchana'. The movie will again feature Sachin and Ranjeeta in the lead.
Talking about the new project, Sachin revealed, "In AKJS, we saw the beautiful romance between Arun Mathur and Lily where eventually, Arun was left alone after his beloved,
Lily's (Ranjeeta) death and he has been living in her memory ever since. Jaana Pehchana introduces Asha (Ranjeeta), an author, who has an uncanny resemblance to Lily. She walks into the life of Arun Mathur to write his biography. What follows from there is a contemporary love story with a beautiful blend of old school romance combined with young love."
With 'Jaana Pehchana' one can see Sachin in different roles - he is not only acting in it but also did the screenplay and is even taking the directorial reins.
The movie's music will be composed by legendary Ravindra Jain whose compositions in the original went on to become a huge when they were released.
Arbaaz drops his quickie in favour of Salman's 'Dabangg 2'
It's a known fact now that Salman Khan won't be beginning 'Dabangg 2' before next year. However brother Arbaaz Khan had been devising a Plan B earlier to mitigate this situation. The latest though is that the actor turned producer and now also the director (with 'Dabangg 2') has decided not to go ahead with a quickie that he was earlier contemplating to make during the interim period before he gets 'Dabangg 2' on floors. "Yes, there was a possibility of doing that but I guess there is no point going ahead with that. If at all I have to make any film other than Salman, it has to be with an A-lister. Now dates of none of the top stars are currently available. And if I think of making a film with a smaller star or say a newcomer, it requires all the more effort to make them understand expectations and then further market and promote the film," says Arbaaz. He further goes on to reason, "Moreover, even a quickie requires 8-9 months at least from start to finish. By that time 'Dabangg 2' schedule would be staring at me. It would be too much too soon I guess and I don't want to drain myself out. I would rather wait for the next big one instead of worrying about not shooting for the next few months." Good decision Arbaaz. |

Salman to revisit history
B-town's news-grabber, the 'Dabangg' Khan Salman is soon going to take over the small screens again.
After 'Dus Ka Dum', Sallu miyaa will don the role of a host for History channel. According to sources, the management of the popular channel were keen to make it Indian friendly and so wanted to rope in someone who is quite popular and mass appealing. And going by the dhamdaar status that Salman enjoys on the screens and among the audience, they decided to bring the star on board.
The handsome macho Khan will be styled by his sister Alvira Agnihotri and designer Ashley Rebello.
Well, the History has never been this exciting, right? Be 'ready' for Salman's History class, folks.....

Rana to go national in ads too
Rana Daggubati is not satisfied with making his presence felt in Bollywood alone. He even wants to soar ahead of others in his home industry by endorsing a national brand. According to a credible media report, the actor has been approached a big brand to be its brand ambassador. With his face becoming popular with Dum Maro Dum and Department promising to only raise his popularity in future, Rana seems to be a favourite choice of top brands. This is not the first time that a manufacturer has thought of signing Rana. In the past, it is learnt, a mobile brand had approached him and he had almost given a nod to it. He was dissuaded to reject it by some well-wishers to debut in ads with a greater brand. The hunk, given his physique and looks, is likely to endorse many more brands in the near future. |

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Review
'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' opens on a familiar note. Three boys get together for a bachelors' road trip where it would be them and only them in Spain. As their journey continues through the scenic locations of Spain, something which actually eats up at least a quarter of the screen time of ZNMD, Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay indulge into various sports activities.
So while an oh-so-extended scuba diving with Katrina Kaif in company hardly manages to excite and actually starts boring after a while, the second sports activity comes way too late in the day. Thankfully it is the most exciting of the lot as the three guys get into some sky diving mode. And then there is this enthralling but abruptly cut short 'running with the bulls' (which incidentally was the original title of the film) sports which could have been just the kind of climax that would have raised the film's fortunes. However it turns out to be an anti-climax of sorts where one ends up wondering whether the concluding reel has gone missing from the final print.
So while the first half of the film actually keeps you engaged for most part of it, the second half doesn't quite carry much steam and even though there are a few good sequences thrown in, one does feel as if something is really missing. As for the end then well, it makes one truly believe that in an attempt to break rules, ZNMD has actually gone a little too far.
Thankfully there are witty one liners as well as realistically narrated sequences between the trio that keeps one's interest alive in ZNMD. So whether it is Farhan's constant 'bag worship', his mildly flirtatious ways or pulling Hrithik's leg time again - it all works in favour of the film, especially during the film's first half. Ditto for various tricks that Abhay plays on not just a few unsuspecting victims but even his friends when he claims to know their 'hidden secrets'.
On the other hand it won't be wrong to say that Hrithik's track is the weakest of the lot, what with majority of his scenes with Katrina acting as frequent speed breakers in the narrative. Yes, Katrina does well in what one could term as an extended special appearance (she just disappears for most part of the second half before making a sudden comeback) but then her constant 'gyaan' around life's philosophy only ends up distracting one more than being involved. This is the reason why even Farhan is fine as long as he is having fun but once his poetry starts playing in the background, ZNMD turns into a different film.
Having said that, most of the cast members have approached their part with full conviction. Hrithik starts off on an okay note but gets on his own during the latter part of the film. Farhan is the pick of the lot and that's because not just is his characterisation very convincing, he does quite well as an actor as well. On the other hand Abhay is quite adorable to begin with but as tension mounts in his personal life, his 'audience friendly' charm also goes sliding down. Katrina is fine and does her best not to be bogged down by a role that requires heavy-duty dialogue-baazi. Kalki's part had scope to be much funnier but she does well in her limited screen time. Naseruddin Shah is good in his cameo.
I am sure Zoya Akhtar's intentions would have been quite right when she embarked upon 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. She could have perhaps said to herself that 'Ok, let me make a film about male bonding with an element of philosophy about life being thrown in. In addition, I will break away from all the clichs which means there won't be any skirt chasing, boys' visit to the night clubs and those pseudo 'hey dude' calls'.
Well, to a good extent she succeeds as well and though her story telling is unconventional, one doesn't see much harm even as it tries to go against the tide. Now how one wishes that the momentum was maintained right through those long two and a half hours of play time with a definite ending at the least that could have made all the difference for ZNMD to be real class apart than turning out to be a story which is good, but that's about it.
